12" Vinyl. Full color front cover depicts Romans practicing Christian Death (a painting by Georges Rochegrosse "Andromaque") in a rather grisly scene. Rear has the famous photo of Rozz holding a cross made from thorny rose stems and a little text. Also included a 8 page booklet with credits, tracklist, lyrics (in French and English), one illustration by Max Ernst, a black and white picture of Rozz with animal skull, and an extract from "Chants of Maldoror" by Lautreamont in both language. Cover booklet is an illustration by Max Ernst. Note mispelled title "Theater" instead of "Theatre".

Cassette. Cover is orange. Inner have the lyrics. According to Lisa Fancher from Frontier, this item is a promo. This is the first cassette release of Only Theatre Of Pain. It includes the tracks from Deathwish, however they are interspersed among the OTOP tracks on both sides of the tape. Maybe this was done to give a consistent play length for each side of the tape.

DEATHWISH

Recorded at Orange County Studios in 1981.
These 6 songs were the first recordings Christian Death recorded in a studio before the band signed to Frontier records for ONLY THEATRE OF PAIN.
They were asked to provide some songs for the 'Hell comes to your house' punk compilation album (Frontier, 1981), however only 'Dogs' ended up being used.

  1984 FR L'Invitation au Suicide (Suicide Differe N°4)
12" Vinyl. The cover is a reproduction of the painting "Who shall deliver me" by Fernand Khnopff. Reverse has text in French by Jean Lorrain and a picture depicting a child sat upon the coffin of a dead woman (Alfred Kubin "la fiancee de la mort"). Contains 12 page booklet in thin textured paper (in French and English) with tracklist, 4 poems (by Iwan Gilkin, Emile Verhaeren, Remy de Gourmont and Baudelaire), the text by Jean Lorrain (in English) and pencil drawings (notably by Max Klinger). Cover booklet is a black and white reproduction of "Portrait of Stuart Merril" by Jean Delville.

12" Vinyl. Cover identical to original in all respects except for removal of IAS from rear of cover and replacement with Contempo label and bar code, and Kubin's illustration is reversed for some obscure reason. Reproduction of booklet is not as good quality and text on rear of booklet has been completely re-typeset (Khnopff cover illustration is credited 1981!). Label also changed on vinyl.

Gatefold is blue with pictures and text reproduced from the original. The label is an exact reproduction of the original. Normal didn't even stamp their name on it.

5" CD. Cover is lilac with the photo from the original IAS cover. Booklet is a reconfiguration of the Contempo booklet. It contains lyrics, one b & w photo each of Rozz, Valor, and David, and a poem by Valor. The back of the booklet is pink and has the list of titles, credits, and the dedication. The back of the CD box has the photo of Gitane with her hands covering her face (but not her eyes), and another poem by Valor. The CD itself is light blue or gray and have the cross and bones logo.

5" CD. Cover has photo from IAS cover without any border, and the name of the band appears in Valor's newer logo. Booklet contains lyrics but no credits. CD has better sound than USA reissues, and includes the bonus tracks from the Contempo CD (which are unlisted).


  1999 USA Cleopatra (CLP 0546-2)
5" CD. Digitally remastered. Cover is almost the original IAS cover, only with trademark registration symbol next to band name. Booklet contains photos of Rozz and Valor, plus lyrics and a story translated from French which is poorly typeset and paginated. CD tray contains b&w photo of bodies coming out of sand. The back of the CD box has another story in French and a drawing of a face (Rozz?) obscured by netting. Gitane and David are not mentioned anywhere. The title on the spine is misprinted as PORNOGRAPHIC MESSIAH on initial copies, an error which has since been corrected.

    1999 UK Candlelight (CANDLE039 CD)
5" CD. Digitally remastered. Very similar to Cleopatra release (story still paginated wrong) but title on spine is correct. Two tracks are shifted due to some mistake ("This Glass House" is before "Cervix Couch"). CD tray contains a different photo. Contains enhanced CD material (a few pictures) and additional tracks: "Awake at the Wall (Live)" and "The Drowning (Live)" (from The Decomposition of Violets).

12" Vinyl. This is an unauthorised release, with fake IAS label. There were 500 copies made. All of them had a booklet but only 474 of them have numbers. The other 26 were lettered A-Z. These 26 copies had a photo (probably black and white 8 1/2 x 11) with them as well as the booklet.

12" Vinyl. This LP has a white cover and comes with a 16 page (12") booklet in glossy paper designed by Rozz. The front cover illustration is "The Souls of Paolo & Francesca" and the rear is "Beatrice Appears Among the Angels", both by Gustave Dore' from Dante's Divine Comedy. The booklet contains odd bits of conversations and pictures of people in various forms of dementia.

He agrees to let the others use the name until the end of their European tour.

  1985 IT Supporti Fonografici (SF 003)
12" Vinyl. The cover is a reproduction of the painting 'Ophelia, by Millais. Subtitled FOR SIN AND SACRIFICE WE MUST DIE A CHRISTIAN DEATH, which gives a new meaning to the band name. Contains an 8 page glossy booklet with a pair of folded hands on the cover (which later appear on German versions of ASHES). Inside are lyrics and pencil drawings. Rear of sleeve has a track list and photos of the band. Rear of booklet contains a poem by Gitane. Initial quantities came with a bonus one sided 7" (SF 003 1/2) of "Lacrima Christi", sung in Italian. The album cover has a black ringed circle printed in the top left hand corner "inclusio un 45 giri edizione limitata in omaggio" adaptor needed to play the 7".

12" Vinyl. Almost identical to the above. Re-released with a single sheet insert replacing the booklet, back and front of original only missing the photos.

12" Vinyl. White cover with a sepia photo of Gitane lying on a gravestone. Rear of sleeve has 2 pictures, one of a child in a coffin, and one of two mummified corpses lying side by side in separate simple wooden coffins. Contains the English version of "Lacrima Christi" as a bonus track. Comes with 8 page booklet with interesting pictures (one of a nun and one of a naked girl) with quotes by Lautreamont. Front cover of booklet as per Italian LP cover with photo of band on the back.

5" CD. Re-released with the subtitle PAST AND PRESENT, and containing three extra tracks. Red cover of 8 page booklet depicts a naked woman, her arm bent back over her head, above which a man holds a skull. A woman rests her head upon his shoulder, clutching a baby to her face.
A second release from Normal (N 76 CD) came in 1990 with same title but with the artwork and tracklist of later Contempo Records release PAST, PRESENT AND FOREVER (see page 2).




  1999 USA Cleopatra (CLP 0544-2)
5" CD. Digitally remastered. Cover is black with red lettering, and contains the photo from the original Italian cover, though not the "Sin and Sacrifice" subtitle. Booklet contains drawings and lyrics, but no credits. The back of the booklet contains a distorted version of the photo from PAST, PRESENT AND FOREVER, and a track list. This also includes the three extra tracks from the other CD editions. There is an audible static click less than one minute into "Blast of the Bough".

"Believers of the Unpure" appears on THE WIND KISSED PICTURES. "Between Youth" and "After the Rain" appear on some CD versions of CATASTROPHE BALLET. "Believers of the Unpure" and "After the Rain" both appear later on the compilation JESUS POINTS THE BONE AT YOU?


 

AN OFFICIAL ANTHOLOGY OF LIVE BOOTLEGS
Recorded in various places by random bootleggers between 1981 and 1986.
Several of these tracks feature Valor singing in Rozz's place, as Rozz had just left the band.
Rozz reportedly had no hand in this release and received no royalty for it.

"Untitled" later appears as "Working On Beyond" on Rozz's INVOCATIONS and Shadow Project's first CD.
"Birth" was an instrumental intro to show from 1981.
"Coming Forth By Day" exist only as a livetrack..
